The lead single from Red Hot Chili Peppers’ sprawling double album Stadium Arcadium (2006), “Tell Me Baby” won the Grammy for Best Rock Song and Best Rock Performance the following year. Written by Kiedis, Flea, John Frusciante and Chad Smith — the classic lineup in their final album together before Frusciante’s departure — the song is about the dreamers and drifters who arrive in Los Angeles with a story and a suitcase. It has a restrained, melodic quality that sits slightly apart from RHCP’s more frenetic work, which makes it a natural fit for a soul vocal.
