Released in February 2017 as the lead single from Katy Perry’s Witness, “Chained To The Rhythm” is one of pop’s more self-aware tracks: a deliberately danceable song about the danger of being too comfortable to question anything. Written with Max Martin, Sia and Skip Marley (grandson of Bob Marley, who features on the track) it has a reggae-inflected groove underneath its dance-pop surface. The irony is the point: a song that critiques mindless entertainment, designed to be played at parties. It reached #4 on both the UK chart and the Billboard Hot 100.

About Love Is A Battlefield
Pat Benatar recorded “Love Is A Battlefield”, a song written by Mike Chapman and Holly Knight for her 1983 album Live from Earth, and it went on to win her the Grammy Award for Best Female Rock Vocal Performance in 1984. The Brooklyn-born singer with the four-octave soprano voice had already established herself as one of rock’s most powerful female voices; “Love Is A Battlefield” gave that power a pop-crossover moment without softening it. The music video, featuring Benatar and a group of young runaways turning a strip club into a dance protest, was among the most elaborate and expensive of the MTV era and became iconic in its own right. The message that love demands a fight and the fight is worth having landed then and hasn’t dated since.
