About Europapa

Joost Klein, born in 1998 in Drachten, Friesland, represented the Netherlands at the Eurovision Song Contest 2024 in Malmö. “Europapa” is a happy hardcore and gabberpop track built around a deceptively simple hook: the word “europapa,” which Joost coined as a portmanteau of Europe and papa. His father, who died when Joost was young, had always wanted him to see Europe. The song is a promise fulfilled — a tribute at 180 BPM, delivered with gabber energy and genuine grief underneath. Joost was controversially disqualified from the Eurovision final following a backstage incident with a camera operator, sparking a wave of support in the Netherlands. The song had already done what it needed to do.

About Pa

Doe Maar were the biggest Dutch rock band of the early 1980s: Ernst Jansz, Jan Hendriks and the rest of a group that built a devoted following with their reggae-influenced new wave sound at a time when that combination felt genuinely exciting. “Pa,” from their 1983 album 4us, is among their most direct and unguarded songs — a son talking to his father in plain, honest Dutch. The band split in 1984 at the height of their popularity, leaving behind a catalogue that has endured for over forty years. “Pa” remains one of the most quietly affecting songs in Dutch pop.
