The beat was a deliberate exercise in restraint as Pharrell built it around tongue clicks and a near-silent bassline, with almost no traditional instrumentation. It spent eight non-consecutive weeks at #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 and remains one of the most imitated beats in hip-hop history. Written and recorded by Barry, Robin and Maurice Gibb in 1977 for the Saturday Night Fever soundtrack, “Stayin’ Alive” became one of the defining songs of the disco era. Its BPM of 103.3 is so perfectly suited to CPR chest compressions that the American Heart Association actively recommends using it as a mental metronome when performing resuscitation. It reached #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 in February 1978 and has never really left the cultural conversation since.
